    If your have issues with your new cap fitting on the old tank, but you did not have these issues with the prior cap, your threads are likely worn down on the gas tank neck. The reason the old cap still works is because the threads on the old cap are most likely warn as well. If you put the new cap on and it pops off right away, this is a clear indication that the threads are bad on the tank. The only solution to this is to replace the whole tank and cap with new parts.
