Vintage Snow White Tumbler-DOC-
You are buying one glass. FREE PRIORITY MAIL SHIPPING to the United States! Will be well packed!
This glass was made in 1937 - 1938, in Ohio, by Libbey Glass Company. Part of the original 1938 promotional campaign for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This is the much harder to find, 4 line verse, two color version of the Disney design
(see additional info below for details on rarity).
The tumbler is clear glass with red and yellow graphics. Depicts Doc on the front with his name and 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' around the bottom. On the back is the 4 line verse:
Now this is DOC whose charming style,
Just cannot be resisted;
But when he talks you have to smile--
He gets his words all twisted.
The glass is shown from all sides in photos with a white piece of paper to better show the graphics and condition. Glass is also shown to scale with a tape measure. In very good condition, shows some tiny specks of red color loss outlining his face and legs. Because of the overlapping colors the specks show yellow underneath instead of total loss. Fairly minor and the rest of the graphics are very nice. There are a few very, very tiny seed bubbles. No chips, cracks or scratches!
Additional information and history...
For Disney's first full length animated movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney took on a large scale promotional campaign. One of the first promotions of it's kind, Disney paired with several companies to help advertise the movie. One of the easiest ways to get the public's attention was 'dairy glasses' a tried and true method for advertising during the depression.
Fully licensed by Disney, Libbey produced then trucked orders all across the country. They were sold in stores and from mail order but the bulk were sent to farms and dairies owned by companies like Kraft. They were then filled with cottage cheese, peanut butter and jelly ect... You could buy one of these decorative cups at your local grocer and after you finished your product, you had this glass that could be reused as a tumbler.
Once the movie was released in December of 1937, to overwhelming success, Disney expanded the tie in with additional products including more styles of glassware. As a company hit hard by the depression and still struggling, this work order from Disney came at just the right time for Libbey. They made several styles of glasses and a juice and pitcher set as well.
This particular set of two color graphics was a limited line produced after the single color set, likely in 1938, but information on dates and total runs produced are scarce. It was originally sold as an 8 part set with display box, featuring one with each dwarf and one of Snow White. Reportedly this 2 color set was only available to retailers for resale, not used as a dairy promotional. This set can be seen in the 1938 N. Shure Novelty House of Chicago catalog for 55 cents a set!!!!
***I have the whole set of 8 for sale, I do not have the box. I debated selling them as a set, but I've had poor luck selling any kinds of sets in the past. Typically I get messages concerning one or two pieces to round out someone's collection. So while it may be more work for me to list each individually, I feel it's a bit more buyer friendly. If you are interested in the entire set, I will discount the total price, just message me if interested.
***I have around 50 Disney glasses from the 1930's and 1940's to list. They were all owned by a collector and are in very nice condition. I hope to have them all listed in the next two weeks so please check back if interested!
If you have any questions please contact me, and please look at the photographs... they are part of the description! I have a day job so most messages will be answered in the evening.
